The Oldest Marathi Inscription


श्री चावुंडराजे करवियले श्री गंगराजे सुत्ताले करवियले

This is the oldest rock cut inscription in Marathi language. The inscription is carved on the stone at the left feet of Gomateshwar Bahubali statue, the world's highest monolithic statue. The statue is situated on the Indragiri hill of Shravanabelagola, Karnataka in South India.

  1. Nice to see this news! There is a severe language problem between Maharashtra and Karnataka (wherein they have claimed Belgaon). I hope Kannadigas will see this article and understand that Marathi language existed there centuries before!
